More Ways Than One
The enemy of getting started is perfection. The enemy of continuing daily, weekly, monthly is expecting to get it totally right.Often times people like us who are unwilling to continue in ways like this are perfectionist. Obsessed with being right, consistent, perfect, we weigh and measure, forecast and project, plan and budget…and never move. From my house to downtown Bellingham, WA, there are at least three good routes I can take. All of them work better than the other two for different reasons. The question is not “Which is best?” or “Which is the right way?”. The question is really about my priorities. Speed? Scenic views? Proximity to certain amenities? These are all questions of priorities and tradeoffs. But don’t confuse perfectionism and an obsession with being right with knowing your priorities, and knowing what to give up. Often, they’re at odds with each other.(Psst. There isn’t a perfect route to Bellingham, but if I don’t know my priorities, I won’t ever get there.)
