On Leadership #4
"Leadership is the art of empowering others to DO THE WORK ONLY THEY CAN DO.”Good leadership is about getting people to do the work. But it’s not measured in “percent delegated", as if the best leaders assign the most work. Good leaders are not only master delegators. Terrible leaders can be master delegators because delegation in and of itself is not a good.If I delegate market analysis to the receptionist or receptionist responsibilities to the head of product development, I have not won. I’ve succeeded at delegating but have failed at being a leader.Again, if I delegate sermon delivery or a public speech to someone with no oratory skill, I have not won. I have not led.Leadership is not the role of delegation alone but the role of connecting the right people to the right work.Leadership is about knowing—really knowing!—the unique gifts of those around you, so you can give them the work only they can do.
