On Leadership #5
"Leadership is the art of empowering others to do the work only they can do."It’s art. It’s empowerment. It’s about connecting the right people to the right work. There are two major assumptions about leadership being challenged here:Assumption #1:Your leadership is measured by your success—or success of the group, the company, the brand, the whatever. Not true. Not primarily true, at least.Good leadership is measured by the success of the individuals around you. Without those people thriving, the rest is doomed. A good question to check if this is truly how you’re measuring your success as a leader is this: Do you delight in the success, achievements, progress, growth of those around you?Assumption #2:Leadership is fundamentally about “leading”, which is taking the attention, resources, skills, and time of those around you and putting them to efficient use. Not true.Leadership is not fundamentally about taking but about giving of ourselves. It’s measured first by generosity. And, of course, this is just one way of saying that leadership is not primarily grounded in the ego, but instead, in the heart.Ask yourself:Do I delight in others’ success?Do I give generously of myself?
