Weekly Roundup: Insecurity II
March 8 - March 12, 2021
Monday: We write treatises, forge systems, and build institutions to reinforce that who we are and what we “stand” for is unshakable and permanent. It never is. Inevitably we feel attacked, persecuted, and paranoid—all threats to true security.
Tuesday: If our posture in the face of the unfamiliar is defensive, we don’t become more secure, we merely reveal the insecurity that is out of our reach. If we’re curious, our insecurity comes close. And when it’s close, it can inspire us to learn. To grow. To be better.
Wednesday: But transformation is not the antidote for a sickness; rather, it’s the relationship that occurs when we submit to the process of examination, understanding, and gentle attendance. It feels a lot more like holding a baby than a barbell, more like a walk in the woods than boot camp, more like prayer than preaching.
Thursday: The lie has become, “You are judged by the relative accomplishments you’ve made in your career.” These accomplishments, more than your job or position, elevate you above your nearest colleague. Personal websites, LinkedIn, and CV’s fuel this lie.
Friday: Like an autoimmune disease, insecurity is a destructive force within me that ravages my wellbeing if it goes unaddressed. It’s a type of illness that capitalizes on passivity. The less I do to address it—assuming it will, without an antidote and without work, simply subside—the more it dictates a false and destructive narrative about who I am.
