The Broody Hen

[Short Allegories – V]

A broody hen sits on a nest, unmoved, for days on end.

There are two problems. First, she sits on an empty nest, which means her efforts are in vain. Second, broodiness and laying eggs do not coexist, which means she will not lay any eggs while she stubbornly protects the empty nest.

The chicken’s efforts are futile. The chicken owner is short one egg per day.

Clearly the chicken is delusional.
Or, is she brilliant?

The chicken is responding to a deep urge in her body that says, “Now is the time to do that thing that you were designed to do.” Regardless the evidence, she will starve herself trying to realize that purpose.

Her timing may be wrong this time, but her willingness to try is the only thing that will make her right the next time.

It’s better to appear delusional answering your call than never trying at all.
