I Saw an Interview

[Notes to Self – VIII]

I saw an interview with two respected leaders. One of the questions was about social media as it relates to creative work.

One said (my paraphrase), “Social media is inherently distracting from the hard work of real creativity. Don’t do it if you don’t have to. Your contribution to the world is more substantive than the medium promotes, less reactive than most of the content, and your work comes from within.”

The other said (my paraphrase), “I love social media! It’s fast, its’ easy, and I can leverage it to get my ideas out. I’ve generated a huge following, and I’m constantly taking queues from it for what to do next.”

The second leader interrupted the first leader to answer. He was louder and more aggressive.

In a way, the first leader made his point twice. Once when he spoke and again when he (and the audience) listened to the other leader's rant.

Be like the first leader.
