The Real World

[Notes to Self – II]

How many times have I heard, “That’ll never work in the real world,” or “That’s too idealistic,” or any dismissive comment meant to deflate my enthusiasm about the future? Maybe a hundred. Maybe more.

What is this real world people are referring to, anyways?

I mean, I know it’s the world we live in. The culture, cities, economy, etc. that dictate our day-to-day comings and goings.

I get it.

But what about the world we’ll live in tomorrow. Does that count? Is that the real world, too? Because if it is, their comments are depressing. They may not realize it, but what they’re saying is, “I cannot imagine the world being any different.”

I can. We can.
That’s why people like us are unwilling to continue with the way things are. Because a different future is possible. And we can picture it. The real world might refer to today, but it doesn’t have authority to name tomorrow.

If you hear, “That’ll never work in the real world,” it’s probably a sign you’re on the right track.
