Bigger
[Behind the Pursuit - I]
It’s no secret we love BIG.
Big cars.
Big TVs.
Big stadiums.
Big stories.
Big companies.
But I’m not sure what we’re after when we pursue bigger stuff is something, anything BIG.
Do we really want more square footage when we pursue a bigger house? Or do we want less confinement, less clutter, and less conflict in shared bathrooms?
Do we really want a 74 inch TV in our living room? Or do we want to be the living room people come to for the big game?
Are we really after big tires on our big Suburbans, or is there a certain comfort that comes with driving the largest vehicle on the road?
I have no judgement for big. My care is the disparity between what we pursue and what we desire. Bigger will never satisfy the desire that actually requires smaller. Bigger will rarely meet our desires for relationship, for security, for self-worth. And if it does, it's pure chance.
And people like us are more intentional than subjecting our lives to pure chance.
