Curating Renewal

Work ethic goes a long way to landing a job.

But I’ll tell you what it can’t get you: a job at a museum or art gallery. (Unless, of course, you want to be the janitor.)

Why is that? Because they don’t need work horses; they need curators. The mantra of a curator is not, “More, more, more” or “Harder, harder, harder.” The mantra of a curator is, “Less, less, less.” Curating is the art of knowing what not to include, not to hang, not to display. A curator mercilessly edits and subtracts until only the essentials are left.

The only way an organization, a faith community, or a business can undergo a successful renewal is to avoid the temptation to hire the next workhorse or the next strategist. Instead, be more like a museum or an art gallery: hire a curator.

Let the process of subtraction begin.
The future will emerge when the clutter is removed.
