Heaven, Here

Here’s a short theological riff for you.How do I get to Heaven?A lawyer asked Jesus that question once. And Jesus told him, “Find someone you dislike, give generously to him, and check back regularly to see if he needs anything.” *Done. That’s all it takes. There’s a rope tied between our hand and the door to our heart. When we reach out to help someone, even an enemy, the door to our heart opens, making space for them. At first, maybe only a crack, but over time, the door swings open and stays that way. That’s a heavenly thing: turning enemies—very slowly, one generous, risky extension of our hand at a time—into friends. That's dangerous. That’s house-changing, street-changing, community-changing stuff.People like us that are unwilling to continue like this are willing to take the risk and do the work. For Heaven, here.*See The Parable of the Good Samaritan (Luke 10)
