Slamming the Door

[The Creative Call – XIII]

The creative call is not just about production, it’s also about perception. Slamming the door is an example.

We’ve all slammed the door on a dream, an idea, a relationship, or our own imagination. Slamming the door and leaving (literally or metaphorically) does little in the way of completion. It’s only momentarily satisfying. But there is no real closure, no conclusion, just immediate and harsh termination.

Creativity reminds us that while a door may be shut, and while we may regret having slammed it, it’s never locked. The creative call is to return and explore what we missed and what we can learn.

Creativity is to imagine a different ending. It’s a reminder to give ourself a second chance. Another look. A willful and hearty does of grace.
