Resumes are Spam
[More on Work – IV]
Anything you can teach someone to do to “advance their career” in ten minutes has little value.
Make sure the font is consistent.
Use “action verbs”.
Make it symmetrical.
Spell check.
Put your name in bold.
I can teach someone to write a decent looking resume in minutes. That’s why they are spam.
You, however, are not your resume. Nor are your gifts, your experience, your expertise, or your interests and passions. The question is How do you get you in front of the person that needs to meet you? Not a resume. Maybe a letter. Perhaps a direct call. A friend of a friend. A piece of art.
Never resign yourself to showcasing your gifts in ways that suggests all it took was a ten minute lesson. Your gifts took a lifetime to cultivate. Find ways to communicate your whole self.
