Weekly Roundup: Coronavirus

I'm committed to offering heartfelt, faith-filled reflections on our common struggle, the pandemic that is the Coronavirus. I will continue to do this until is seems that my contributions are redundant or unedifying. Here is a "roundup" of the first week. –Ryan

March 23 – March 27, 2020

Monday: Religious leaders are strategically situated, in this time of coronavirus mayhem, to do that which seems so rarely done: tell the truth. As truth-tellers, we do an injustice to our communities when we narrowly define what the truth is.

Tuesday: If there was ever a time to get off the 24-hour news cycle train, it is now. It is not serving our collective health well. A pandemic plus internet news that seeks to amass clicks, is a recipe for hysteria . . . People like us in a time like this will step off the train, and instead, facilitate conversations.

Wednesday: The future includes the ongoing possibility of this type of calamity. If we’re waiting for things to return to normal, we’ll be waiting forever. We’ve entered the future that many of us feared.

Thursday: The consequences of recession always flow downhill. The pain of society-wide hardship is always greatest at the bottom. People like us that are unwilling to continue in ways like this are already asking who will be the most vulnerable tomorrow.

Friday: And people like us are not a silent minority in the quality of life “department"; we understand that life suffers when we neglect ultimate purpose (calling), charitable discourse and generosity (grace), and radical forgiveness (mercy). These are the pillars we’ve been given and we must now build and maintain.
