Social Infrastructure
Facebook.Google.Apple.What do these three massive entities have in common? Well, a lot. But you probably didn’t say that they each have invested billions of dollars building campuses that cultivate healthy social infrastructure.Consider that. Three of the most powerful tech companies in the world, all three that have virtually created and capitalized on markets that promote physical isolation (even if they promote social connection), have spent billions to construct space where employees can interact and connect healthfully. Why? Because despite the message that social media will keep the whole world relationally connected (Facebook), or that unlimited access to information will empower the masses (Google), or the virtue of owning the most powerful computational machine in history—in your front pocket (Apple), we as humans need healthy, concrete, social infrastructure. Where we can connect to our community. Where we can belong. For our emotional health. Our physical health. Our spiritual health.Who are your people? Your tribe?People like us that are unwilling to continue like this know we need a tribe. We connect and invest and give of ourselves to that community, knowing that it is priceless to us, and knowing that to the tribe, we are priceless. No technology will satisfy that need.
